More than a third of medical interns in WA are struggling with depression.

27% graduate with self-reported with depression, which then increases to 35% during intership.

I don't think the gravity of the work will change after intership, I don't think the hours will reduce, I don't even think a cure for the common cold will be found. What I do know is this: you are the best tool or worst detractor in any clinical engagement. And when you start at a deficit, get confronted with taxing work, with no clear and specific professional wellbeing mandate for that that situation, you will be in trouble. So will your patients.

You cannot travel further with another than you have travelled on your own. Professional wellbeing, and the ability to engage well in high stakes conversations should be central to every single course which train people to work with people.

Which brings me to a recent report by the Gallup Institute that only 35% of managers are engaged...insert timebombs, ticking...
